Literacy - making our own non-fiction texts!

In Literacy we have been finding the answers to some questions that were asked during our topic time. We have been searching through non-fiction books we chose in the library, looking in dictionaries, glossaries and looking on the internet to find the answers!

This week we will be continuing to search for information to create our own non-fiction page about flowers!

Topic - What a busy week!

Look at our fantastic paintings inspired by Hermel Alejandre! We explored the abstract nature of his painting and used close up images of sunflowers and daisies to create our own. We used brusho to make our images lovely and bright!

We have been busy planting in our vegetable patch this week! We have planted lettuces, carrots and runner beans! We have a couple more things still to plant this week... I can't wait to see them grow!

Our Garden Monitors have done a great job looking after our pansies this week! We were very excited to see a couple of them have started to flower! I wonder how many more have come out over the weekend!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Last week in our topic we have been busy learning about seeds and the 'cycle' of plants. We have thought about what plants need to grow and we have been busy planting our own flowers! We will be choosing a Garden Monitor each day to water our plants. I cant wait to see what they look like when they flower!
This week in topic we will be learning about the different parts of a flower and towards the end of the week we will be looking at the work of artist Hermel Alejandre. We will be creating our own abstract painting looking closely at the different parts of the flower. What do you think of this painting? I love it!

Numeracy - Partitioning numbers.

At the end of last week we learnt about partitioning for example, 37 = 30 + 7 and developed our understanding using place value cards.

This week we will continue to learn about partitioning and begin to use this knowledge to help us with our addition. For example...

'40 + 20 = 60' is the same as '4 tens + 2 tens = 6 tens' and we know '4 + 2 = 6'.

We will also begin to understand that addition can be done in any order. For example...

  '5 + 4 = 9' is the same as '4 + 5 = 9'.

Literacy - Information Texts...

In Literacy this week we are continuing to look at information texts. On Monday we will be visiting the library to find some information books to extend our learning about plants and growing. We will be thinking about the features of non-fiction texts and thinking carefully about what the difference between fact and fiction is. Throughout the week we will be using our books to find information and realise just how much we can learn from books! Towards the end of the week we will be thinking where else we can find information and use the internet to find some facts!

Literacy....Recount writing

In Literacy this week we will be looking at recount writing. We will start the week by thinking about our holiday and how we can write about it in lots of detail. We will be thinking about what makes a good recount and seeing if we can identify these features in a variety of different recounts. Later in the week we will planning, and writing, our own recount of planting seeds.

Welcome back!!

Hello! I hope you have all had a lovely holiday and you're all looking forward to coming back to school tomorrow... I'm excited to hear what you have all been up to and we will be writing about this in Literacy. We have a very exciting topic planned for this half term called 'How Does Your Garden Grow?' This week in our topic time we will be exploring seeds and following their journey from seed to flowering plants, and we will be getting busy in the garden planting our own plants!
