We have been looking at how to record our data in lots of different ways this week. Here are some websites to practise answering questions about data.

Welcome back...
Hello! I hope you have all had a lovely half term break and are all ready and raring to go tomorrow! This term is a short one, but don't worry because we are filling it with some very exciting things...
We will be looking at fantasy stories, sounds, music, magical bugs and more... so I think a very fitting name for this topic is 'Sounds Interesting...!'
In Literacy this week we will begin looking at fantasy stories and what the word 'fantasy' means. We are going to have a lot of fun with this unit... I know you are all going to have some brilliant ideas with your wonderful imaginations!
In Numeracy this week we are looking at lots of different ways to present data for example, making tables, pictograms and Venn diagrams. Our focus will be on mini beasts...but this link will become more obvious as the term goes on!
In our topic time, we will be exploring different sounds. How do we hear sounds? What is sound? How do we make sound? How do we make music? We will be trying to answer as many of the questions we came up with at the end of last term as possible!
There are some games on mycity for you, and here are some links to get you started.
What different sounds can you hear on your way to school tomorrow? Have a listen!
See you tomorrow!

Science - Where did all the lights go?
In our topic we have been learning about light. We investigated which materials blocked the light and decided what we would make a pair of curtains out of. Today we went into the hall with a whole tray of things we thought were sources of light, but when we closed all of the blinds and turned all of the lights off we couldn't see them anymore! After a discussion we sorted the objects again based on our new learning. Our sources of light included a torch, the flame of a candle and the LED light on the microphone. We noticed lots of the things we thought were sources of light were shiny. We talked about how these materials reflected the light well and that's why we thought they were initially! What sources of light can you find at home? Have a look around your room when you go to bed, can you see any lights, or any objects that are reflecting light?
Literacy
In Literacy this week we are looking at features of non-fiction books. We know non-fiction books have:
- A contents page
- An index
- A glossary (although not always)
- Labels
- Photographs
We are trying really hard in our writing to turn something we have read into our own words. Can you find some non-fiction books at home? Did you look at a recipe book to help you make some pancakes tonight?
Numeracy - Capacity
In year one this week we have learnt a new word - capacity! We know it is how much something can hold so we are spending the week investigating capacity. We have been outside with the water deciding what 'full, empty, half, nearly full and nearly empty' look like. We had a big discussion whether half full is the same as half empty and came to the agreement that it is! Over the next few days we will be estimating and measuring capacity. e.g How many yoghurt pots it take to fill a container. We will be comparing capacities and thinking how we can work out which is bigger.
Enterprise Market...
After a lot of hard work, market research, great ideas and a lot of fun here is a picture of our stall at the Enterprise market. We raised over £50 for charity and we came third overall! A great effort all round :) WELL DONE YEAR ONE

Topic - Enterprise Week
I hope you have all recharged your batteries over the weekend because this week is going to be very busy! For Enterprise week this year we have decided to continue our learning about the Victorians. We were inspired on our visit to the museum to create our own Victorian toys to sell at the Enterprise market on Friday. We will be making peg dolls, cup and ball toys and victoria sponge cakes!
On Monday we will be learning about fair trade and thinking about what we think fair trade looks like. We will look at the journey of a cocoa bean being made into chocolate, and incorporate this learning into our information writing in Literacy. On Tuesday we will be thinking about designing our cup and ball toys and conducting some market research to see what our target market would like. We will spend the rest of the week designing, making, (tasting) and evaluating our products and making sure we are ready for the Enterprise Market on Friday afternoon.
Numeracy - money, money, money
To prepare us for the Enterprise Market, in Numeracy we will be looking at money and learning how to count with money and even to begin to give change. We will be thinking about what number facts we already know, for example counting in 2s and 10s and doubling numbers, and seeing if we can use these facts to help us find totals of money. You could practise this at home by turning your kitchen in to a role-play shop with price labels on food items, or even in your bedroom by sticking price labels your toys! There are also some games on 'mycity' to practise counting money.
Literacy - Enterprise week
The children all worked so hard last week writing their version of the traditional tale 'The Three Little Pigs'. The children created story maps to plan their own characters and houses and then used these to help them write their stories. I think they are amazing and we are looking forward to sharing them with you after assembly on Friday.
This week promises to be a very busy week as it is Enterprise week! On Monday we will begin by thinking about what jobs we might like to have in the future (and why!)
We will be looking at a variety of information texts, and recalling the features of these text-types that we discovered last term. We will be continuing our learning about the Victorians and finding out all sorts of information about the era in books and on the internet.
Later in the week we will be looking at advertisement and we will be creating posters for our Enterprise week products using ICT. Any practise you can have at home typing words and sentences on word programs will be very useful!
