We had a lovely time on our visit to the museum today! We all learnt lots about the Victorians and we got to have a go at doing lots of things too! We are going to have a Victorian afternoon tomorrow to make some of the things we learnt about today. Here are some of the pictures we took, I'm sure the children can tell you some of things we learnt about using the pictures....

Targets
This week we have thought about targets and what we can do to achieve them. We have a class writing target and a class numeracy target, which both involve handwriting and the formation of letters and numbers. In our class assembly we thought about how we can achieve these target and stuck them around the edge to remind ourselves. Each group has their own targets for writing, reading and numeracy. These are looked after by the groups 'target monitor' whose job it is to remind the group of their target each day.
Topic Houses and Homes
In our topic this week we are going to be learning about the Victorians. We will begin by identifying differences in houses through time. On Wednesday we are going to the Dorset County Museum which I am very excited about! Inside they have a Victorian cottage and lots of victorian artefacts for us to see and learn about! We will be thinking of questions before we go and looking and listening for the answers at the musuem. Click here to learn more.
Numeracy - 3D Shapes
In Numeracy this week we are starting to investigate 3D shapes. There are lots of games on 'mycity' to support learning at home. Can you find any 3D shapes on your way to school or in your home?
Literacy - Traditional Tales
In Literacy this week we will continue to look at Traditional Tales. We looked at lots of tales at the end of last week and noticed lots of common features. Most had good and bad characters, most took place in a forest, farm on in the countryside, most had a happy ending and most had a repeated line for example 'run, run as fast as you can, you cant catch me I'm the gingerbread man!' This week we are going to have a go at writing our own traditional tale!!
Here are some of our poems from last week on display in our classroom.

An exciting week...
This week has been a very busy week in year one! We have made our model street and it looks excellent! Mason brought in a book from home about model villages, and we noticed all the other things that are found on a street. Miss Burge gave us 2 pieces of cardboard and we had to sort everything else out ourselves (we realised that things don't always magically appear and we have to find things ourselves - and put them away again...) We then made houses details for our model houses to go in our estate agents - a great week in year one!

Amazing writing
This morning we did some independent writing in year one. Lucas wrote such an amazing poem that I wanted to share it with you all...
Sounds
The tiniest sound in the world is a mouse squeaking.
The spookiest sound in the world is the trees crashing in the night.
The noisiest sound in the world is a girl screaming.
The quietest sound in the world is a person whispering.
The best sound in the world is a person saying well done.
The loveliest sound in the world is a bird tweeting.
Well done Lucas!

Model Houses....
Here are some of the amazing model houses we have been making this week. It was tricky cutting the windows out as we folded the paper in half and cut out the middle to make the window frame, but after we had done one or two we were away! I cant wait to see what they are all going to look like when we have finished our model street!

Topic - making a model street!
In our Houses and Home topic we will be creating our own model street! We will be thinking about the features of houses and developing our skills of designing and techniques for joining materials.
If you have any recycling, small cardboard boxes or child shoe boxes at home PLEASE can you bring them in on Monday.

Numeracy
In Numeracy we will be learning (and trying to remember) pairs of numbers that total 10. Knowing these number facts will really help us in our numeracy learning. We will be reminding ourselves of our number 'doubles' and seeing how this can help us with our subtraction.
We will also be solving subtraction 'word' problems for example,
Mark bought 14 sweets at the shop. He gave 6 to his friend Gemma. How many does Mark have left?
Literacy
In Literacy next week we will be finishing our poetry unit, and thinking about our last sense by listening to what we can hear around us. We will be going on a sound walk around school and writing poems based on what we hear. We will also be using our imagination to think what noises different things make.
On Thursday we start our next unit 'Traditional Tales'. I am really excited about starting this unit so start thinking about traditional tales you already know... We will be story making and creating our own stories... get ready to get your story hats on!

SNOW DAY
Good morning year one!
I hope you all have a nice day in the snow today, remember to wrap up warm and play safely....
...but if it is too cold outside and you are looking for things to do then look no further.
Literacy - today in Literacy we were going to be writing our poems on to best paper concentrating on our handwriting. You could write a winter poem and use all of the top tips we have been using in class (describing words, repetition, comparing things). It is really important to form our letters properly as this will help us when we come to join our letters and will help with our spelling. Any handwriting practise you can do at home would be great! Here is a picture to remind you where to start your letters.
In Numeracy we would be continuing to practise our subtraction. I was so impressed yesterday as we had not done any 'taking-away' before and everyone picked it up really quickly! To practise taking away there are lots of activities on the IXL website under 'subtraction'.
Letters and Sounds...there are lots of fun phonics games for reinforcement on http://www.familylearning.org.uk/phonics_games.html. The children should know what phase they are working in. Blending and spelling practise are always very useful too.
Have fun today and stay safe. I will see you all on Monday.

A walk around our local area....
Today we went for a walk around Blandford St. Mary looking at all the different styles of houses. We were all very well behaved and we spotted lots of things we normally just walk past! We saw lots of terraced houses, semi detached and some detached houses, as well as some flats and some houses with curved walls! We noticed that almost every house looked different and decided this was good as the world would be a bit boring if all of the houses looked the same!
A big thank you from all of us to everyone who came to help us on our walk!

Another two...
Today we welcomed two catfish into our tank... We had another vote and they are now called 'Spongebob' (the smaller one) and 'Squarepants' (the bigger one). These fish will be really good in the tank as they are algae-eaters, so they can help Mr Skinny Legs with the cleaning!!!
Literacy - Describing colour...
In Literacy today we thought about how colours make us feel and what they remind us of. We came up with some excellent ideas... These ideas will be very useful tomorrow when we begin to write our poems!

Literacy
In Literacy this week we are continuing our work on poetry and using our senses to help us with our ideas. We will be looking at lots of poems and thinking about why the writers have used certain words.
We are focusing on colours thinking about how colours make us feel and what they might represent. We have been using lots of brilliant describing words last week so we will be using these in our writing and seeing if we can come up with some similes!

Numeracy
This week in Numeracy we are looking at 'counting on' to help us with our addition. We will be learning to count one set of objects and then using this number as our start number when adding another number. I have put some good games to practise this on 'my city'. Temple Crusade is particularly good.
We are also learning that adding can be done in any order. Temple of Doom on 'mycity' is a good game to practise this.
Later in the week we will begin to learn about subtraction, and understanding subtraction as 'taking away' objects from a set and finding out how many are left.

Remember we have IXL now, any of the 'Adding' or 'Subtracting' games will be great reinforcement.

We had lots of fun this afternoon on the construction site! We have been busy planning, building walls, painting and thinking about how to keep safe!
