Beach Trip

Remember to think about all of the things we have learnt during our Summer Safety topic. Please come to the school tomorrow morning with everything you need to keep safe in the sun so we can all enjoy the day!

The end of a very hot week!

Despite the hot weather last week year one were busy working hard! We have been learning all over the school (including some very strange places) whilst trying to find somewhere cool...! As part of our Where the Wild Things Are week we wrote fantasy stories in Literacy and in Topic we have been getting very creative developing our Art and Design skills!! Here are some pictures from the week....
These are our yummy 'Wild Thing' cakes...we had great fun making these!
This is our fantastic Where The Wild Things Are picture. We all worked together as a group to create the setting using a variety of printing skills. We thought carefully about the Wild Things to go on the setting and created them using brusho.

Summer has arrived!

The weather forecast for the weekend is finally looking good so we are getting into the summer spirit in year one this week!

Literacy
In Literacy we will continue our work on Poetry and will be writing our very own poems about the seaside! We will think about all of the top tips we have learnt so far from looking at lots of different poems.

We have tried really hard this week to use comparisons in our writing, for example...

The waves at the beach were as rough as sandpaper.

We have also learnt the word 'alliteration' and have been describing objects using alliteration, for example...

The clever crab crept along the carpark clicking his claws.

I can't wait to read our poems when they are finished!

Numeracy
In Numeracy this week we are learning about Odd and Even numbers. See if you can start to recognise odd and even numbers here...
Odd and Even
Odd and Even 2
We will also continue to practise counting in 2s and 5s and using this knowledge to solve word problems and money problems.

Topic
In Topic we are continuing our theme of Summer by looking at 'Summer Safety'. With summer (hopefully) fast approaching and the beach trip on the horizon I think it is very important for us all to learn how to keep ourselves safe and to learn the responsibilities we have to keep us safe. After introducing this topic we went outside for our afternoon break. Having told the children it was very hot outside so not to run around and to find some shade I turned around to see this........!

Watch this video to start learning about staying safe in the sun!

Pizza!!

In Numeracy last week we were learning about fractions! We looked at the story of the Little Red Hen makes a Pizza, and once we had learnt all about sharing and fractions we made our very own pizza! If you look closely you will notice they were particularly special pizzas as they had fraction toppings! Each group had a recipe telling them how much of the pizza would be covered by each of the toppings... we had great fun making the pizzas...and of course great fun eating them!

Ahoy me hearties!

We have all had a busy few weeks in year one and we have been working hard! We have been thinking about our transition into year two and the children visited their new classroom and met their new teacher on Wednesday! It was very exciting!

We have come to the end of our Pirate topic and we have all learnt so much about Pirates...me included! We have produced some fantastic writing, numeracy, home learning and topic work!

Here are our 3D treasure islands. We used salt dough to make the island and thought carefully about what features we could have on our map, and how we could create these features. It was very sticky and needed a lot of patience to get them right!

Once we were happy with our treasure islands we had to leave them to dry and go hard! Once they were dry we were ready to paint them! We thought carefully about what colours we would need and worked with blacks and whites to make our colours darker or lighter. We also mixed the colours we didn't have. I think they look fantastic!

 Can you spot yours?

We have also made our own map based on the story 'A New Home for a Pirate'. We listened carefully to the story and talked about all the events that happened. We then had to create our own maps based on the story. We dipped them in tea to make them look old! We have learnt lots of map skills!

This weeks home learning was fantastic! A very big well done to everyone who brought in a model of something you might find on a pirate ship! Here is a picture of your wonderful creations...

Another exciting week...

In Literacy next week we will be learning about letter writing. We
will be writing letters to each other and we will also start to think about next year and what questions we could ask in a letter to Year Two. We will also be thinking of the differences between Reception and Year One and will be writing letters to Reception to tell them all about Year One.

In Numeracy next week is 'Creative Maths Week'. We are going to be reading the story 'The Little Red Hen makes a Pizza' which will support our learning about fractions. We will be looking at fractions of shapes and numbers. We will be learning two new words about fractions too... the 'numerator' and the 'denominator'. We will be designing our own Pizza's and we will even have a go at making some!

In Topic we will be continuing our Pirate theme. We will be thinking about Pirate's treasure and where they found their 'booty'. We will be looking at maps, atlases and globes to locate places where they found booty and we will also be making our own treasure islands! We will be welcoming some Reception children in to our classroom again too!

On Monday we have something very exciting coming to school...The Science Dome! We will be visiting the Science Dome first thing Monday morning so we have a very fun start to the week!
As we have another week planned here is a copy of what is happening when!

All about our week....

In Year One we have been learning about Pirates!

This week we have learnt about some famous pirates called Anne Bonney and Captain Blackbeard. We have written a pirate code, a glossary, labelled a pirate ship and we have written everything we know about pirates in our own non-fiction text! A very busy week for Literacy!

In Numeracy we have been adding up multiples of 10 and today we practised taking them away too!

In Topic we have made our own treasure maps based on the story 'A New Home for a Pirate'. We dipped them in coffee and tea to make them look old!

In other news we also have a baby fish in our fish tank! It's very tiny so you have to look very carefully!

Another busy week coming up!

We have a busy week coming up in Year One! On Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday morning you will all have a go at a phonics activity with me where I can see all the wonderful learning you have been doing in Letters and Sounds this year!

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about non-fiction texts and pirates. We are going to be finding out about two famous Pirates... Captain Blackbeard and Anne Bonny! We have all been great at using 'topic words' in our writing so we are going to have a go at writing our own pirate glossary. We are going to have a big write to see how much we have learnt about Pirates!

In Numeracy next week we are practising our counting and adding skills. We are going to be using treasure, money and all sorts of other 'piratey' things to help us with our learning! Can you remember our top tips for adding? See how many you can remember and tell me in Monday's numeracy lesson!

We have a very exciting week planned for our Topic learning! We are going to be developing our map skills and seeing if we can design a map for a pirate story! We will also be using bee bots to input instructions to find the treasure! We are going to be joined by some Reception children too which will give us a chance to show them the fun things we get up to in Year One!

On Friday afternoon we are very lucky as we have some people coming in to school to perform the story of 'Tom's Midnight Garden'! As things are a little bit different this week here is a new timetable just for this week!

Ahoy!

This week we have been learning all about Pirates! We have been using non-fiction texts to find out about pirates. We have practised our note making skills to help us write our own information texts. Here is one of our note making sheets.

In Numeracy we have been looking at direction and position and we have been directing each other around treasure maps. We have also been looking at time and have been making plans for Pirate Pete's day. We have thought about all the jobs he would have to do on the ship and when he should do them!

In Topic we have looked closely at what pirates wear. We have been busy making our own life-size pirates to go in our new role play area! We have made ourselves a pirate cafe on board a pirate ship!

A week to be proud of...

Scroll down to find out about all the exciting things we have been up to in Arts Week!

In Art we have been busy making all sorts of african style crafts. We have learnt about african dance masks and we had a go at making our own with clay. We learnt lots of new skills...they look great!

We have been talking about the animals we might find around the Victoria Falls. We all worked together to produce this fantastic giraffe picture! We used paint and objects to print with for the background, and we used oil pastels to create the giraffes.

We have also been looking at African patterns. We noticed they were often in stripes and have lots of shapes in them. As well as making our own individual patterns we have also made this whole class pattern where we all contributed a stripe each! I think it looks wonderful!

In Numeracy we have been making tables and bar charts about what you can see in these lovely images painted by Zimbabwean women. We have also been looking at capacity and deciding which containers would be most useful in Africa. Have a go at making your own pictograph here. Make your own Pictograph

In Literacy we imagined we had spent the week at Victoria Falls. We have written letters telling the people at home about what we have been up to at the falls! All of year one have written some fantastic letters! They are all up in the hall for you to come and have a look at!

We also had an african dance and drumming workshop. It was great! We learnt a dance called the Gahu and learnt the beats that go with the dance on the drums! We have been practising it in active time too!

We have had a really busy week in Year One! We have produced some fantastic, great quality work that all the children should be very proud of. Well done Year One.

Arts Week!

Hello! I hope you are all enjoying your half term! I am sure you are all having lots of fun and are very busy! If you do start looking for things to do towards the end of the week remember your home learning and to practise your letters and sounds!

I am very excited about next week as it is our Arts Week! The theme across the school is the 'Seven Natural Wonders of the World'. Do you know what they are? Watch this video to find out more...

In Year One we are going to be learning about the amazing Victoria Falls which are found along the Zambezi River which divides Zimbabwe and Zambia, both of these countries are in Africa. You might like to find out some facts about the falls to share with the class when we come back!

They are beautiful aren't they! We will be learning about the falls, and Africa, all across the curriculum.
  •  In Literacy we will be following the blog of a young girl in Africa and finding out about her adventures at the falls.
  • In Numeracy we are going to be exploring/sorting African art and thinking about water and capacity.
  • In Guided Reading we will be looking at a range of books, both fiction and non-fiction, that look at different parts of the topic.
  • In Topic time we are going to look at african art, pattern and dance masks and have a go at making our own! We are also going to have an african dance workshop where we will get to learn some african beats on drums too!

Literacy - Play Scripts

In Literacy this week we will continue our work on Play Scripts. We have been busy learning about all the different features of play scripts, learning the story of Chicken Licken, and we have started to write our own play scripts! Here is a preview of one of Mae's play script. She has remembered to include the features of play scripts and her handwriting is fantastic too! Well done!

Topic - Giuseppe Arcimboldo

As part of our topic we have been looking at the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We looked at some of his paintings here, and looked at what he had used for the different facial features. In groups we were then given a tray of fruit and we had to design our own face in the style of Giuseppe. We then sketched our images and practised mixing colours to create our own paintings. This week in topic we will be practising our ICT skills to create more pictures in the style of Giuseppe! Pictures to follow...

Topic - Welcome to our Cafe....

Welcome to our new Cafe! We have been busy making menus and thinking about what we need inside the cafe. We have tables and chairs, food, a till, a cooker, a microwave, aprons and chef hats... and even a place to wash up!

Making Pasta!

We had a great time making Pasta today! We had some interesting suggestions for what we thought the ingredients of pasta were, and then we found out there were only 2 ingredients... flour and eggs! Simple! We worked in groups to mix, knead, roll and cut the pasta and then Mrs Gibson boiled the pasta in boiling water. We added a bolognese sauce and then we tried out our creation!
It was DELICIOUS!

Topic - Where in the World?

When we first thought about what we wanted to learn about in our topic, lots of people wanted to know where food comes from and how it is made, so this week we will be answering some of these questions! We will look at where different fruits come from around the world using a world map and an atlas. On Tuesday, after some very interesting ideas about where pasta comes from, we will be having a go at making our own! On Friday we will be playing with food! We are going to make faces out of a variety of foods, sketch them, and then work on mixing paints to make the right colours to paint them! There is a great game here to inspire you...
